The 10 Gram Rule Explained
Many visitors misunderstand Swiss law, assuming that because possession of a small amount is "decriminalized," the substance is legal. This is false.
- Consumption is Illegal: Smoking or consuming cannabis with >1% THC in public is prohibited. If caught by police, you face an on-the-spot fine (Ordnungsbusse) of 100 CHF.
- Possession (under 10g): If police find you in possession of less than 10 grams of THC cannabis for personal use, you will not receive a criminal fine or a criminal record.
- Confiscation: Even if you are under the 10g limit, the police have the right to confiscate and destroy the cannabis, as it remains an illicit substance.

Hotels and Airbnbs
Almost all hotels and rental properties in Zurich maintain strict non-smoking policies inside rooms. Smoking on balconies can lead to noise or odor complaints from neighbors, which can prompt the management or police to intervene. Fines for breaking hotel smoking rules are often steep (upwards of 200 CHF for cleaning fees).
Borders and Zurich Airport (ZRH)
Never attempt to bring THC cannabis into or out of Switzerland. Crossing the border with illicit substances elevates the offense from simple possession to smuggling, which carries heavy fines and potential criminal charges. Customs officials at Zurich Airport and train borders are highly trained.
Driving and Rental Cars
Switzerland has a strict zero-tolerance policy for driving under the influence of THC. Police frequently conduct random roadside checks using saliva and blood tests. A positive result leads to immediate loss of driving privileges, severe fines (thousands of Francs), and criminal prosecution.
