Forget the German "100-Meter Rule"
Many people read about Germany's legalization (which allows public smoking outside a 100-meter radius of schools/parks) and assume it applies to Zurich. It does not. Under Swiss federal law, the general consumption of recreational THC cannabis (>1%) in public is forbidden everywhere and is punishable by a 100 CHF on-the-spot fine, regardless of your distance from a school.

Consuming cannabis in or around school grounds, playgrounds, or anywhere in the direct presence of minors is viewed strictly by police and can lead to elevated charges.

Hotels & Airbnbs
Virtually all hotels prohibit indoor smoking. Balconies fall under private property rules, but heavy odors often result in noise/smell complaints from neighbors, bringing management or police to your door.

Zurich gastronomy is subject to indoor smoking bans. Even in designated smoking rooms (Fumoirs), consuming illicit substances is forbidden and venues will eject patrons to protect their licenses.

Private Properties
Inside your own home, consumption is largely a private matter. However, landlords can enforce smoking bans, and severe neighbor complaints about passive smoke can still lead to police intervention.

Züri Can Consumption Rules
A common misconception is that participants in the Züri Can study can smoke their study products anywhere. This is false.
Study participants are bound by the exact same public consumption laws as everyone else. The legal consumption of Züri Can products is restricted strictly to:
- The participant's own private home.
- The heavily ventilated, officially authorized consumption zones inside specific participating Social Clubs (not open to the public).

Passive Smoking & Nuisance
In Switzerland, tenant law and neighborhood codes are strict regarding immissions (odors, noise). Even if you are smoking legal CBD (or illegal THC) on your private balcony, if the smoke heavily drifts into a neighbor's window and they complain, the police or your landlord can take action against you for disturbing the peace.
Traffic & Driving Rules
Road traffic rules override zoning maps. Switzerland enforces an absolute zero-tolerance policy for driving under the influence of THC. It does not matter if you consumed on private property; if you drive and are checked, a positive test results in license confiscation, massive fines, and criminal prosecution.
